Here are some details about Freewheelin at Ideafest in Louisville, Ky.
What is Freewheelin? Freewheelin is a cultural movement and philosophy built upon a universally
fun activity: bike riding. Utilizing a form of exercise with both physical and emotional
appeal, Freewheelin engages people in a personally and environmentally healthy transportation
mode.
How can I be a part of the Freewheelin
experience at Ideafest?
We understand that time is of the essence, and keeping your busy schedule in mind,
we’ve made Freewheelin registration as simple as possible. Anyone interested in riding a bike
can register in person at any one of our Freewheelin stations, located in the downtown Louisville area. Greeters will be on site at every
station to assist with registration, and a Safety Specialist will answer any questions
you may have about cycling.
How much does it cost to participate in Freewheelin?
It's free!
You can ride any bike you’d like between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at no cost to you. We’re here to provide you with a dynamic mode of transportation, and the energy it takes to pedal a bike is the only contribution you’ll need to provide.
What are the health benefits from biking?
Biking brings you a myriad of health benefits. We’d put you to sleep if we listed
them all, so instead, let’s break it down. Studies have shown that just 10 minutes
of biking can reduce depression and provide a noticeable mood boost. Thirty minutes
of cycling per day can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50 percent.
Long-term effects of cycling are reduced Body Mass Index (BMI) and overall improved
health.
I can’t find my helmet. Can I still ride?
Absolutely. We will have helmets available at all of the stations for all riders.
While helmet usage is not required by federal law, we strongly encourage it. Please
refer to the Bicycling Safety Tips for more information.
What are the hours of operation?
All Freewheelin stations will operate between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Show up at any station
between these hours to relive your youth and enjoy a bike experience that is second
to none.
How can I track my mileage while I’m at Ideafest?
All of the bikes will be equipped with odometers, which will record every mile you
ride. We’ll let you know after the event your personal tally on rides taken, miles ridden, calories burned and carbon footprint reduced. We want you to know
exactly how the simple act of biking can positively impact your health and your
environment.
Who can check out a bike?
Anyone over the age of 18 in Louisville during Ideafest is
free to check out and ride a bike.
I don’t know my way around Louisville. How can I bike around the city?
Trust us, you’re not the only one with this concern! Maps will be available, and
we will also have Travel Guides to help you navigate the city. Our Travel Guides
are seasoned riders with knowledge of the area who will lead group rides from one
destination to another. During the group rides, they’ll provide helpful safety tips,
as well as information about the surrounding area. These group rides will be a regular
occurrence, so we encourage you to explore the city on two wheels and make
new friends in the process.
Where will bikes be available during Ideafest?
Bike stations will be located in the heart of downtown Louisville. We’re placing stations near the convention center and major hotel clusters,
so the bikes will be useful for convention transportation.
